A couple of days ago marked the 2 year anniversary of my move from Wellington to Melbourne and it made me think about what I left behind and what I have gained. One of the things I miss most is my amazing group of girlfriends from high school, university and my musical theatre days. This is a list of all the things I’d love to do on the weekends if they were over here with me (and should plan with my Melbourne based girlfriends).
Pamper Weekend. Needing a little R & R? Is your skin desperately crying out for some love and affection? Either book a luxurious weekend at a spa retreat for the full works of organic meals, yoga and meditation classes, massage and bush walks; or choose the cheaper DIY version. Stock up on the essential ingredients: facial masks (plus cucumber), massage oils, body lotions, foot spa baths etc. Soak it up.
Makeover Weekend. Every woman loves a good makeover and it’s much more fun with a friend in tow. You can bring clothes/shoes/bags you’re not convinced about and get feedback or swap them. Try out your friend’s new eyeshadows and glosses or even better, book appointments at your favourite cosmetics counters and let them create a whole new make-up look for you.
TV Show Marathon Weekend. Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, Mad Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy – whatever your fave, get the entire box set on DVD and have a TV marathon. You will need to pre-plan delicious snacks and what pajamas to snuggle up in. Perfect in winter with the heater/fire on.
Volunteering/Social Responsibility Weekend. Give something back to your community and enjoy the warm fuzzy rewards. You could get your hands dirty cleaning up river/bush areas or planting trees, spend time at a retirement village hearing stories of the good old days or assist at a homeless shelter/soup kitchen. Discuss what you and your girlfriend are passionate about and find some way to contribute to that cause with your time and energy.
Foodie Weekend. If you love trying new restaurants and cuisine, treat yourself to a decadent foodie weekend. Book breakfast, lunch and dinner all at different restaurants and cafes and taste test the best your city has to offer. If you’re a real connoisseur take notes and compare dishes over a glass of wine or cocktail in the evening.
Something Old, Something New Weekend. Spend Saturday doing all the things you used to do when you first met. Perhaps taking silly photos in photo booths, drinking slurpies in the botanic gardens, playing arcade games or rollerblading by the beach. On Sunday, plan to do as many new activities as you can. Attend a cooking class (or try a new recipe together at home), visit a new exhibit at your local art museum, learn how to ice skate or go berry picking.
